Bucephalandra is often regarded as a beginner-friendly aquarium plant for aquascaping, though it’s not chosen as frequently as other popular types like Anubias, Amazon Sword, or Java Fern. However, this family of aquatic aroid plants shouldn't be overlooked! Commonly called Buce, this flowering genus brings dynamic color, texture, shapes, and sizes to any planted tank. Freya is a variety we're not yet familiar with, but we like what we see. It features rounded, ruffled leaves with a distinct rib running down the center and bold green color that’s nearly black. Under the right aquarium light, it’s sure to produce beautiful contrast and the signature shimmer Bucephalandra are known for.
Bucephalandra are a wonderful choice for everything from nano aquariums to large aquascapes and even terrarium enclosures. They’re highly adaptable and forgiving plants, with the rewards often outweighing any risks. When planted in nature aquariums, keep the rhizome above the substrate and attach it to driftwood, rocks, or any porous surface. Choose a spot in your planted aquarium that receives moderate light and good water flow. To increase growing speed and bring out the best colors in Buce, CO2 injection will go a long way.
